Special Edition

Introduction of a new version of the list of Market Identifier Codes

A new edition of the ISO 10383 standard was approved and published by ISO last year. This new edition impacts the structure and contents of the list of Market Identifier Codes that is published monthly on www.iso10383.org.

A coexistence period has been planned until end August 2013 to ensure a smooth migration and allow the community to update their data systems with the new features at their own pace. During this coexistence period, the old version of the List of Market Identifier Codes and the new version are made available on www.iso10383.org, containing the same list of MICs, only the level of granularity differs.

For those who are retrieving the list of MICs automatically from the website, two URLs (see below) are provided to permit the direct download of the old version or the new version of the list without need to ‘locate’ them on the webpage.
http://www.swift.com/customforms/downloads/ISO10383_MIC_OLD.xls  for the old version
http://www.swift.com/customforms/downloads/ISO10383_MIC.xls for the new version

The former link will be available until end August 2013, while the latter will continue to be available after the coexistence period.
To enable automated users to identify the file version, the version of the list is included in the document itself, in the first cell (A1) of the last worksheet which is called “Version”. The file version has the following format: MMMYYYY_vn, for example AUG2013_v1.

What is the difference with the previous edition of the standard?

The old and the new lists contain the exact same MICs. Only the level of granularity has changed. The new edition of the ISO 10383 standard defines two levels of MIC codes; like parent-child codes. We talk about “operating” (= parent) and “market segment” (= child) MICs.
In the old list, these MICs are all shown at the same level. In the new list, the level of each MIC (O for “operating” or S for “market segment”) is identified, as well as the linkage between the market segment MIC(s) and their operating MIC. See database extract below.
